Beginner meditation

Four steps to get started

  1. Get comfortable

Sit on a chair, cushion or bolster, or lie down. Comfort matters more than form.

  2. Choose an anchor

Rest your attention on the breath, a sound or the feeling of your hands.

  3. Notice and return

When your mind wanders, notice where it went and gently come back. That's the practice.

  4. Start small

Five minutes a day is a lovely beginning. Let the habit grow on its own.

Breathwork

Make space to reset

Breathwork classes introduce gentle techniques such as counted breathing and a longer exhale. They are quiet, simple and suitable for beginners. If you are pregnant or have a respiratory or heart condition, please check with a healthcare professional first.

Meditation questions

Still wondering? Our teachers are always happy to talk before or after class.

Do I need to sit cross-legged?

No. You can sit on a chair, a cushion or a bolster, or lie down. The best position is one you can stay in comfortably.

What if I can't stop thinking?

Thoughts are part of meditation. The practice is noticing when your attention has drifted and gently bringing it back, as many times as you need.

Is breathwork suitable for everyone?

The techniques we teach are gentle, but if you're pregnant or have a respiratory or heart condition, check with a healthcare professional first and let your teacher know.

How often should I practise?

A few minutes most days tends to be more helpful than an occasional long session. Our journal includes a five-minute practice to get you started.
