What to Expect on Your First Yoga Retreat
Thinking about a yoga retreat? A friendly guide to daily rhythms, packing and choosing a retreat that suits your pace.
Written by Elena Brooks, Hatha & Alignment

A yoga retreat is a chance to step away from your usual routine and give your practice more time. If you have never been on one, here is what a typical day might look like and how to prepare.
A typical day
Every retreat is different, but many follow a similar rhythm.
Morning
Meditation or breathwork, followed by an active yoga class before breakfast.
Afternoon
Free time to rest, read, walk or explore.
Evening
A slower class such as Yin or restorative yoga, then a quiet dinner.
Choosing a retreat
Look for a clear daily schedule, an experienced teacher whose classes you enjoy, and an honest description of the level. A good retreat makes it easy to skip a session if you need rest.
Consider travel time and budget too. A long weekend close to home can be just as restorative as a week away.
What to pack
Bring layers for early mornings, two or three sets of comfortable practice clothes, a reusable water bottle and a notebook. Most retreats provide mats and props, but check before you travel.
